Our commitment
The Centre for Ability, Rehabilitation and Empowerment (CARE Nigeria) works for a barrier-free and inclusive Nigeria. Our website should reflect that. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, level AA, and we keep improving the site based on feedback from the people who use it.
Using a screen reader
The website is built to work with screen readers used by blind and partially sighted people, including NVDA and JAWS on Windows, VoiceOver on iPhone, iPad and Mac, and TalkBack on Android.
- Every page has a clear heading structure and labelled regions (header, navigation, main content, footer), so you can jump between them with your screen reader’s shortcuts.
- A “Skip to main content” link is the first thing on every page.
- Images have text descriptions. Decorative images are hidden from screen readers.
- Forms have labels, and errors are announced and linked to the field that needs attention.
- Links that open in a new tab say so, and confirmation messages are announced automatically.
- The photo viewer, menu and slideshow can all be used with the keyboard and announce what they are.
Built-in accessibility tools
Select the blue accessibility button at the bottom-left of any page, or press Alt + Shift + A. Your choices are remembered on your device.
- Read this page aloud and Listen to this article: the website reads the text to you and highlights each paragraph as it goes, with pause, stop and speed controls. This helps people with low vision, dyslexia or difficulty reading. (Screen reader users can keep using their own screen reader.)
- Click to listen: click any heading or paragraph to hear it.
- Text size: make all text up to 60% larger.
- High contrast and Grayscale: stronger or colour-free display.
- Readable font: switches to Atkinson Hyperlegible, a typeface designed by the Braille Institute for people with low vision.
- Text spacing: more space between lines, words and letters.
- Highlight links and Focus outline: makes links and the item you are on easier to see.
- Big cursor and Reading guide: a larger mouse pointer and a bar that helps you keep your place while reading.
- Hide images and Stop animations: fewer distractions and no moving content.
The website also follows your device settings: if you have asked your phone or computer to reduce motion, animations are switched off automatically, and pinch-to-zoom always works.
Using the keyboard
- Tab and Shift + Tab move between links, buttons and form fields.
- Enter or Space activates the selected item.
- Esc closes the menu, the photo viewer, the accessibility options and the read-aloud player.
- In the photo viewer, ← and → move between photos.
- Alt + Shift + A opens the accessibility options.
Known limitations
- Some older news stories include photos of newspaper pages. Their text is also written out in the article where available.
- Some older photos have general descriptions rather than detailed ones. We are improving these over time.
- The map on our contact page is provided by Google. Our full address is always written out next to it.
- We do not yet have Nigerian Sign Language videos. We would like to add them, and we welcome partners who can help.
